A recent visit to Plaza Singapura led us to the Kopitiam Food Hall, where familiar names meet everyday comfort food. Among the stalls, Putien Mama immediately caught our attention. Originating from the acclaimed Michelin-recognised Putien restaurant, Putien Mama is its casual offshoot — offering a pared-down menu of signatures alongside simple, home-style dishes meant for quick, fuss-free meals.

The menu is straightforward and wallet-friendly: Putien Lor Mee ($7.90), Hing Hwa Fried Bee Hoon ($7.90), Sweet and Sour Pork with Lychee ($7.80), and Claypot Assam Fish Fillet with Rice ($8.80). There’s also the Claypot Fish Rice ($8.80), exclusive to Putien Mama, featuring their signature yellow croaker.

We went with the Claypot Assam Fish Fillet with Rice. With only one staff manning the stall, service was understandably efficient but minimal. The fish fillet had been pre-fried and set aside; upon order, it was added directly into the assam sauce without a second fry. The fish used was dory, which was a slight disappointment — we had hoped for a more premium fish given the Putien name. That said, the assam sauce redeemed the dish somewhat. It was well-balanced, pleasantly tangy without being overpowering, and came with lady’s fingers and chunks of tomato that added freshness to the claypot.

We also tried the Mazu Mee Suan ($6.80) — a lighter option that leaned towards comfort rather than bold flavours. The mee suan was soaked in a fragrant, mild broth with hints of vegetable stock, topped with seaweed, lady’s fingers, roasted peanuts, and a sprinkling of cordyceps. Gentle, soothing, and easy to enjoy.

Another stop at the food hall was Aher Soup, a familiar name with over six outlets across Singapore, known for their traditional Chinese soups. We ordered the White Radish Pork Rib Soup ($6.30). The soup was flavoursome and rich without being heavy, and notably not cloying. A nice touch was the stall’s clear “No MSG” indication — and true enough, we didn’t feel thirsty after finishing it. While it may not be the best soup out there, the generous ingredients and reasonable pricing make it a dependable choice.

Overall, Kopitiam Food Hall at Plaza Singapura offers comforting, familiar flavours at accessible prices — perfect for a casual Orchard meal.
