Located at 216 Bedok Central Hawker Centre, Hong Heng Carrot Cake (#01-71) is a classic fried carrot cake stall offering comforting plates of chai tow kway at wallet-friendly prices. The menu is straightforward, with carrot cake priced at $3.50, $4.00, and $4.50 — very reasonable by today’s standards.

During my visit, I ordered both the $3.50 white carrot cake and the $3.50 black sauce carrot cake. Although these were the smallest portions available, the serving size was surprisingly decent. The carrot cake was well-cooked, with a good balance of cai poh, egg, and the familiar fragrance that makes this dish so comforting.

One thing that stood out was the generosity with eggs. Compared to many carrot cake stalls that go light on egg, Hong Heng was noticeably more liberal, giving the dish a richer texture and better balance. The white carrot cake I ordered was the normal version, which is typically prepared with a splash of Thai fish sauce during cooking. This added a subtle savoury depth without being overpowering.

For the black sauce carrot cake, I requested a no-garlic, no-spring-onion version, and the owner was very accommodating. This is particularly thoughtful for customers who observe a vegetarian diet during the 1st and 15th days of the lunar month. It’s reassuring to know that special requests are welcomed, making the stall more inclusive for different dietary needs.

Flavour-wise, the black version delivered that familiar sweet-savoury caramelised taste, while the white version leaned more towards clean, eggy simplicity. Both plates were satisfying, comforting, and well-balanced.
