Who would have thought that a once-forgotten back alley could become one of Kuala Lumpur’s most photographed attractions? Tucked away behind the bustling Petaling Street in Chinatown, Kwai Chai Hong (鬼仔巷) is proof that even an old, neglected lane can enjoy a spectacular comeback!

And its name? That’s where things get interesting!

Literally translated as “Little Ghost Lane”, Kwai Chai Hong has several stories behind its unusual nickname. Some believe it came from the mischievous children who once played here, while others link it to the area’s rather colourful past, when gambling dens and brothels were part of Chinatown’s nightlife. Nobody knows for certain, but the mysterious name has certainly stuck.

From Neglected Alley to Heritage Treasure

During Kuala Lumpur’s early development, Petaling Street was a lively neighbourhood filled with Chinese immigrants, traditional businesses, bustling markets and hardworking families. However, as the city modernized, many old buildings and back lanes gradually lost their former charm.

That changed in April 2019, when a group of passionate local entrepreneurs brought Kwai Chai Hong back to life. The restoration project involved ten pre-war shophouses and the surrounding laneway, transforming the neglected space into an attractive heritage destination while preserving its historical character.

Weathered brick walls, nostalgic Chinese shopfronts, colourful lanterns and beautifully painted murals recreate the atmosphere of Chinatown during the 1960s.

The main attractions are six interactive murals, depicting everyday scenes from old Kuala Lumpur. Visitors can discover traditional barbers, Chinese calligraphers, neighbourhood characters and glimpses of life from a bygone era. These aren’t just pretty paintings; they’re little history lessons hiding in plain sight!

Why Do Tourists Love This Place?

Beyond being a photography hotspot, Kwai Chai Hong serves a bigger purpose: keeping Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown heritage alive while attracting a new generation of visitors.
