Delicious Breakfast at Kedai Makanan Sky โ€“ Jalan Genting Klang, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur

Tucked away in the bustling neighbourhood of Setapak, Kedai Makanan Sky is one of those humble local eateries that may not look fancy from the outside, but quietly wins hearts with comforting flavours and hearty portions.

This old-school coffee shop style eatery attracts residents, students and office workers looking for a satisfying breakfast before starting their day. From traditional noodles to Western-style grilled chicken chop and homemade pancakes, the menu here is surprisingly diverse.

During our visit, we tried a few dishes that showcased the stallโ€™s comforting and honest cooking. Hereโ€™s what we enjoyed.

๐ŸŸ Fish Head Soup with Bee Hoon (RM11.50)

One of the highlights of the morning was the Fish Head Soup with Bee Hoon, a comforting bowl that felt both rich and satisfying.

The fish head was lightly fried before being simmered in a creamy, milky broth. This technique brings out a deep seafood sweetness while keeping the soup fragrant and full-bodied. A subtle touch of cooking wine adds extra aroma, giving the broth a slightly layered flavour.

The bee hoon soaked up the soup beautifully, making each mouthful warm and comforting. Meanwhile, the crispy edges of the fried fish head provided a lovely contrast to the smooth broth.

Itโ€™s the type of hearty bowl that locals love starting their mornings with.

๐Ÿœ Dried Pork Noodles (RM9)

At first glance, the Dried Pork Noodles looked quite simple, but the flavours turned out to be pleasantly surprising.

The bowl came with a mix of ingredients including pork meatballs, minced pork, small fish balls and vegetables. The soup on the side was light yet flavourful, delivering a comforting pork broth that paired well with the noodles.

For the dry version, we chose thin bee hoon instead of the usual mee pok or mee kia commonly found in Singapore. The bee hoon was delicate and slightly thin, similar to Thai vermicelli, but cooked to a perfect al dente texture.

Mixed with dark soy sauce and chilli, the noodles were savoury, slightly spicy and nicely balanced. The texture was just right โ€” tender yet not mushy, with each strand separating easily instead of clumping together.

A simple but enjoyable dish.

๐Ÿ— Grilled Chicken Chop with Mushroom Sauce (RM17.50)

Unexpectedly, the Grilled Chicken Chop turned out to be the star of the breakfast spread.

The chicken was grilled beautifully with a lightly crisp surface while remaining juicy and tender inside. Each bite delivered a satisfying smoky aroma from the grill.

The mushroom sauce added a rich savoury note that complemented the chicken well. For an extra indulgent touch, we added two sunny-side-up eggs on top, turning the dish into a hearty Western-style breakfast.

The runny yolk combined with the sauce created a creamy richness that made the dish even more satisfying.

For a neighbourhood coffee shop, this dish was surprisingly well-executed.

๐Ÿฅž Traditional Pancakes

No breakfast feels complete without something sweet, and the Traditional Pancakes here delivered a comforting local treat.

We tried two flavours โ€” coconut and peanut.

The coconut version was particularly interesting. Instead of being overly sweet, the shredded coconut filling had a subtle salty note that balanced beautifully with the slightly sweet pancake. The coconut tasted fresh and fragrant, suggesting it had been freshly grated rather than using packaged fillings.

The peanut pancake was more traditional, with a nutty and mildly sweet filling that paired well with the soft pancake skin.

Simple, nostalgic and satisfying.

โ˜• A Humble but Authentic Local Breakfast Spot

While Kedai Makanan Sky may look a little worn and unpolished, it reflects the authentic charm of many neighbourhood eateries in Kuala Lumpur.

The setting is casual, sometimes slightly chaotic and not particularly fancy, but thatโ€™s part of the experience. What truly matters here is the comforting food and the relaxed atmosphere where locals gather for their daily breakfast.
