Recently have a Kuala Lumpur trip and stay near to the residential neighbourhood of Setapak, Air Panas Hawker Centre is one of those places that locals know well but many visitors often miss. Unlike the busy food hubs in the city centre, this hawker spot sits away from major MRT stations, making it slightly less accessible for tourists. However, for those willing to travel a little further, the reward is a collection of honest, comforting hawker dishes served at affordable prices.

Surrounded by nearby flats and neighbourhood homes, the hawker centre has a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. Residents often drop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, creating a lively but friendly environment where familiar stall owners greet regular customers. While it may not be the largest hawker centre in Kuala Lumpur, the variety of food stalls here ensures that diners will find something satisfying.
A Quiet Neighbourhood Food Haven
Air Panas Hawker Centre may not have flashy signboards or long tourist queues, but its charm lies in its simple, down-to-earth dining experience. Most stalls focus on classic Malaysian and Chinese hawker favourites, cooked fresh and served quickly.
The seating area is spacious enough for families and residents to gather, especially during meal times when the aroma of sizzling noodles and rich broths fills the air. What makes this place appealing is the sense of authenticity — food here is prepared the way neighbourhood hawker food should be: simple, comforting and full of flavour.

Mr. Bom Wanton Mee – A Classic Favourite
One of the stalls we tried was Mr. Bom Wanton Mee, which serves a satisfying plate of springy noodles topped with char siew and plump wantons.
The noodles were well cooked with a pleasant firmness, coated lightly with savoury sauce that carried a nice balance of sweetness and saltiness. The char siew slices added a smoky touch while the wantons were juicy and flavourful. It was a comforting bowl that reminded us of the classic wanton mee commonly enjoyed across Malaysia.

Kedai Makanan DST Laksa – Rich & Fragrant
For something more robust in flavour, the laksa from Kedai Makanan DST (大树头耀哥咖喱) delivered a bowl that was both rich and aromatic.
The broth had a satisfying curry fragrance with a creamy consistency that coated every strand of noodle. Each spoonful carried layers of spice and coconut flavour without being overwhelming. The ingredients blended well together, creating a bowl that was hearty and comforting, especially for those who enjoy bold Malaysian flavours.

Nasi Ayam Chicken Rice 龙龙 – Comforting & Familiar
Another must-try here is the chicken rice from Nasi Ayam Chicken Rice 龙龙. The dish came with tender poached chicken slices served alongside fragrant rice cooked with chicken stock.
The rice had a nice aroma and fluffy texture, while the chicken was smooth and juicy. Paired with chilli sauce and ginger paste, it delivered the familiar flavours that make chicken rice such a beloved everyday meal.

Shuang Hwa Vegetarian Ban Mee – Light & Wholesome
Vegetarian diners will also find a comforting option at Shuang Hwa Vegetarian (双桦之素). Their vegetarian ban mee offered a lighter but equally satisfying bowl.
The handmade noodles were chewy and nicely cooked, served in a warm broth filled with vegetables and vegetarian ingredients. The soup had a clean, natural sweetness that made the dish feel nourishing and wholesome. Even for non-vegetarians, this bowl was surprisingly enjoyable.

Good Food Worth The Trip
Although Air Panas Hawker Centre is located away from MRT lines and major transport hubs, it remains a worthwhile food destination for those exploring the Setapak area. The combination of affordable prices, neighbourhood charm, and satisfying hawker dishes makes it a pleasant place to enjoy a casual meal, paired with the specially packed iced coffee and hot coffee, it brings back a real sense of nostalgia.
