The carrot cake was well-cooked, with a good balance of cai poh, egg, and the familiar fragrance that makes this dish so comforting.

For those who enjoy having the best of both worlds, the stall also offers a mixed white-and-black carrot cake option on a single plate. Overall, Hong Heng Carrot Cake delivers good flavour, decent portions, friendly service, and strong value for money — definitely a solid stop for carrot cake lovers in the Bedok area.

Among them, Lei Yin Vegetarian truly stands out for its flavour-packed vegetarian bee hoon. As someone who usually prefers meat dishes, this was a pleasant surprise — the kind of dish that can easily convert even the most devoted carnivores.

Each plate is priced at a very affordable $3, making it one of the best-value meals in the market. I opted for the white version of the vegetarian fried bee hoon and paired it with curry vegetables and vegetarian fried goose skin. The portion was generous, easily sufficient for two small eaters.

The vegetarian goose skin was impressively crispy, adding a satisfying crunch to the meal. The curry vegetables delivered familiar, comforting flavours that stayed true to traditional vegetarian curry, with all the expected aromas and spices present. Simple yet deeply satisfying, this stall proves that vegetarian food can be just as hearty and flavourful.

06. Joo Chiat Chaip Kee

Joo Chiat Chiap Kee Fishball Noodles at Bedok 216 Market

Located at Block 216 Bedok Market and Food Centre, Joo Chiat Chiap Kee is a well-known fishball noodle stall in the east, famous for its handmade fishballs and long queues. It is not uncommon to see customers waiting up to an hour for a bowl of their signature fishball noodles.

We tried the Mee Kia Dry S$4 (small) and Bee Hoon Soup $4 (S$5 for large). The dry dish is served with a separate bowl of soup containing fishballs, one fish dumpling, and a pork ball in it. The mee kia noodles were well cooked, giving them a springy bite while soaking up the savoury flavours from pork lard and crispy shallots.

The homemade chilli sauce is a highlight here. It delivers a strong spicy kick and adds depth to the dish without overpowering the noodles, making each bite more satisfying.

Although the fishballs may look slightly uneven due to being handmade, their taste more than makes up for it. They are fresh, bouncy, and pleasantly chewy — a clear reason why they are so popular. In fact, the stall even sells their fishballs raw for customers who want to cook them at home at $4/10 pcs.

One notable highlight is that all fried items are re-fried upon order, ensuring they arrive hot and crispy.

Customers are free to customise their bowl at the sauce station, where sweet sauce and chilli sauce are available, along with a bottle of fried white sesame seeds to sprinkle on top for extra fragrance. The selection here is impressively wide, featuring several handmade items — a refreshing contrast to some Yong Tau Foo stalls that rely mainly on standard frozen ingredients.

The sauces complemented the ingredients well, while the soup was flavourful and comforting. For those who enjoy more broth, opting for a larger bowl of soup is highly recommended.

During a recent visit to Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre & Market, we stopped by Hao Zai Lai Fish Soup King, a newly opened fish soup stall that has been drawing curious diners. Known for its hearty portions and bold flavours, the stall specializes in fish soup dishes that lean towards a richer, more satisfying profile.

The standout dish here is the Signature Red Snapper Fish Head Soup, priced at $10. Served piping hot, the bowl came with several generous chunks of red snapper fish head, accompanied by tofu and lettuce. The fish pieces were substantial, making the dish feel filling and well worth the price.

What truly impressed us was the broth. It had a deeper, more robust flavour compared to regular sliced fish soup, likely from simmering the fish head and bones over time. The result was a comforting, full-bodied soup that tasted naturally rich without being overpowering. When compared to mixed fish soup options, this version clearly stood out for its depth and overall enjoyment.

Portion tip:

The serving size is generous — small eaters can easily share one bowl of soup with two bowls of rice, making it a good option for sharing or for those with lighter appetites.

A visit to Blk 216 Bedok Market and Food Centre wouldn’t feel complete without enjoying a plate of freshly made prata. We ordered the egg prata, priced at an affordable $1.80 per piece, and went for two pieces to make it a satisfying meal.

What stood out immediately was that the prata was prepared only after the order was placed. The stall owner was clearly particular about quality, taking time to ensure each prata was cooked properly rather than rushing through orders. The result was a prata that arrived hot, crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside, with the egg evenly spread and well-cooked.

Paired with the prata was a bowl of curry gravy that complemented it well. The curry was flavourful without being overly spicy, making it easy to enjoy while dipping each bite generously. Together, the prata and curry formed a comforting combination that hit all the right notes.

Simple, freshly made, and done right — this egg prata is a solid choice for breakfast, brunch, or even a light meal when cravings for something warm and familiar strike.
