More Than Just a Café: The Meaningful Story Behind Metta Café in Simei

But behind the food, cakes and coffee is a much bigger story.

Metta Café is part of Metta Welfare Association, and the café was created to provide youths with special needs with opportunities to learn practical F&B and workplace skills in a real working environment.

Here, trainees can gain experience in areas such as food preparation, baking, customer service and daily café operations — skills that can help them move towards greater independence and future employment.

Walking into the café, you will also notice that this is not simply a place serving meals.

There are displays of cookies, baked goods and other products, some of which highlight the work of Metta youths. Around the building, information panels share more about the organisation, its people and the community programmes it supports.

One of the most meaningful parts of the visit is the “Our People, Our Story” wall.

It reminds visitors that behind every programme are individuals learning, developing their abilities and working towards a more independent future.

A Vegetarian Café With Heart 🌱

Metta Café serves a range of vegetarian dishes, including local-style meals, rice dishes and meat-free alternatives.

During our visit, we also spotted pastries, muffins, pies, cookies and other baked items at the counter.

The café has a simple and comfortable atmosphere, making it feel more like a community space than a commercial café.

And that is perhaps what makes Metta Café special.

You are not only stopping by for a meal.

You are supporting a place that gives people an opportunity to learn, work and grow.

A Story That Started With Metta

Metta Welfare Association was founded in 1992 and today provides a range of social-service programmes for individuals and families who require support.

Metta Café later became part of its efforts to provide training and employment opportunities for youths with special needs.

Over the years, some trainees have progressed from apprenticeships into more permanent working roles, showing how a simple café can become a stepping stone towards employment and greater confidence.

Worth Visiting for More Than the Food
