If you haven’t visited Johor Bahru recently, you might be in for a little surprise! While the ever-popular City Square Shopping Mall is busy undergoing a major transformation, its next-door neighbour, KOMTAR JBCC, seems to be enjoying some extra attention from shoppers.

And judging from our recent walk around the mall, there’s still plenty happening here!
A Lively Shopping Escape Amid the Renovation Buzz
Step inside KOMTAR JBCC and you’ll find a pleasant mix of fashion outlets, eateries, bakeries and shoppers wandering between floors. The spacious walkways, glass railings and open atrium give the mall a bright, airy atmosphere.

Food lovers certainly have reasons to linger! From the irresistible aroma of freshly baked buns at Mr. Roti Coffee to the tempting displays at Manzanita, there’s always something to catch your eye.

Brands Outlet also offers a little retail therapy for bargain hunters.

However, it isn’t all bustling excitement. During our visit, certain corners appeared noticeably quieter, with some shuttered shopfronts and less activity on the upper floors. It’s a reminder that even established shopping malls must keep reinventing themselves.
From an Old Shopping Landmark to Modern KOMTAR JBCC
Here’s something interesting: KOMTAR isn’t exactly a newcomer!
The original complex, once known as the Tun Abdul Razak shopping complex, was a familiar shopping destination during the 1980s and 1990s.

Following an extensive redevelopment costing approximately RM400 million, it reopened as the modern KOMTAR JBCC in July 2014. The transformation brought international fashion brands, dining outlets and even the former Angry Birds Activity Park, which became a family attraction.

Today, its strategic location near JB Sentral makes it especially convenient for Singaporeans crossing the Causeway.
Why Isn’t KOMTAR Undergoing the Same Major Renovation?
Interestingly, KOMTAR hasn’t been completely left out of the upgrading race!
Its owner had already announced an asset enhancement programme in 2023, focusing on reshaping the retail mix, improving layouts and introducing new dining concepts.

Unlike City Square’s more extensive redevelopment, KOMTAR’s approach has involved targeted improvements. There is no confirmed public explanation that its owners decided against another major overhaul.

Meanwhile, City Square is undergoing a five-phase transformation, with additional retail space, a children’s adventure park, wellness facilities and hotel accommodation planned. Completion is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027.
A New Shopping Chapter with the RTS Link
With the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link expected to begin passenger operations in early 2027, the shopping landscape around JB Sentral is preparing for another exciting chapter.

Will KOMTAR JBCC benefit from the expected increase in cross-border visitors? Its convenient location certainly gives it an opportunity.

For now, while City Square prepares for its next chapter, KOMTAR JBCC remains a worthwhile stop for a relaxed shopping stroll, casual meal or simply escaping the afternoon heat.
Sometimes, the mall next door deserves a little attention too!
