Stand within Singapore’s bustling Central Business District (CBD) lies a remarkable example of urban design that blends nature with architecture — Marina One Garden. More than just a garden, this lush oasis is a thoughtful response to modern city living, bringing greenery, community space and sustainable architecture into one iconic development.

A “Green Heart” in the City
Marina One is a large mixed-use development that includes office towers, residential spaces and retail — but at its center lies an extraordinary public landscaped garden space known as the Green Heart. Designed by German architect Christoph Ingenhoven and landscape architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman, the Garden spans tens of thousands of square feet and stands as one of the largest public green spaces within Singapore’s financial district, and you can even spot its distinctive silhouette from East Coast Park (ECP).

Rather than placing greenery only at street level, the designers envisioned a multi-tiered garden nestled between Marina One’s four high-rise towers. This “garden within buildings” concept creates a calm, natural refuge — a contrast to the gleaming glass and steel often associated with global business districts.

Nature Meets Sustainable Design
Marina One Garden is more than a pretty space. By integrating nature deeply into the design, the development actively contributes to sustainable urban living. The garden’s lush vegetation helps cool the surrounding microclimate naturally, reducing reliance on artificial air conditioning and promoting a more comfortable outdoor experience even in Singapore’s tropical heat. While we were walking around the garden, I saw little birds chirping, bathing, and playing in the water from a small fountain. It was so fun to watch them playing around.

This biophilic approach to design aligns with Singapore’s long-standing “City in a Garden” vision — the idea that urban environments should be enriched with nature at every scale. From shaded walkways and cascading greenery to water features and quiet seating areas, the Green Heart invites people to slow down, connect with nature and enjoy a different pace of city life.

A Space for People and Community
What makes Marina One Garden especially unique is how it brings people together. Unlike traditional private gardens or secluded rooftop parks, this space is publicly accessible and centrally located, serving not just residents or office workers but anyone passing through the Marina Bay precinct.

Visitors can stroll through winding paths, relax beneath towering tropical trees, or take a moment on one of the many shaded benches. The garden’s gentle pathways and varied plantings create a rich sensory experience — from the scent of foliage after rain to the rustle of leaves overhead.

It’s a place where morning commuters might pause for a coffee, where lunchtime crowds can enjoy a quiet break among greenery, and where visitors explore the landscape before or after visiting nearby attractions such as Gardens by the Bay or the waterfront promenade. 2 MRT stations withing 400 meters namely Downtown and Marina Bay. 1 more MRT station can be reached within 750 meters namely Telok Ayer.

More Than a Garden — A Symbol of Urban Harmony
Marina One Garden is a striking example of how cities can harmonize dense development with expansive natural spaces. In a global era where urban environments often face challenges of heat, overcrowding, and limited public space, Marina One offers an inspiring model: high-density places can also be green, breathable and welcoming.

By placing nature at its heart, Marina One Garden shows that sustainable design and community-oriented spaces are not luxuries — they are essential components of future-ready cities.
