Singapore’s libraries are no longer simply places where books sit quietly on shelves. A visit to Punggol Regional Library and Jurong West Public Library shows how dramatically the library experience has evolved over the years.

Officially opened on 5 April 2023, Punggol Regional Library is the shiny new arrival. Located inside One Punggol, this five-storey library spans approximately 12,180 square metres, making it Singapore’s largest public library. It feels bright, spacious and futuristic—almost like a lifestyle centre that happens to contain thousands of books.

Instead of only offering reading tables, Punggol provides work pods and meeting pods in its Co-working Zone, where freelancers, students and business owners can concentrate or hold discussions. Its facilities also include MakeIT, ExperienceIT, a Study Zone, Teenspace, Toy Library, Spark!Lab and interactive exhibitions telling stories about Punggol’s history.

The capsule-style workspaces photographed inside the library are especially eye-catching. They offer greater privacy than an ordinary desk, although during busy periods, finding an available pod may feel like winning a small lottery.

Punggol Regional Library also places strong emphasis on accessibility. Borrow-n-Go stations, assistive technology, Braille materials, wheelchair-friendly facilities and Calm Pods help make reading and learning more comfortable for visitors with different needs. Its children’s World and Us Zone even features books about cultures, geography and migration from around the world.
Jurong West Public Library, meanwhile, carries a more familiar neighbourhood-library character. It first opened at Jurong Point on 28 March 1996 before relocating to Frontier Community Place and reopening on 10 March 2006. Covering 4,232 square metres across three floors, it was Singapore’s first public library integrated with a community club.

Its outlook may appear older, with traditional wooden bookshelves, brighter children’s colours and fewer futuristic attractions. However, it remains practical and welcoming. Collections include adult fiction, magazines, children’s books, parenting resources, Singapore materials, language books, business titles and a dedicated Manga collection. Visitors will also find multimedia stations, study tables, a storytelling corner and a Quiet Reading Room.

Accessibility is another major difference. Punggol Regional Library sits within One Punggol, close to Sam Kee LRT, while Jurong West Public Library is near Boon Lay MRT and the bus interchange, making it highly convenient for residents around Jurong West, Pioneer, Nanyang and Tuas.
Ultimately, Punggol feels like the library of tomorrow, where reading meets technology, working and interactive learning. Jurong West feels like a trusted old neighbour—less glamorous, perhaps, but dependable, comfortable and still serving its community well after three decades.
