Walking through Nanyang Technological University (NTU), one particular building might make you stop and take a second look. With its towering wooden columns, warm timber interiors, lush greenery and impressive open spaces, Wee Cho Yaw Plaza feels almost like a modern architectural retreat.

But behind this beautiful building lies a meaningful story about one of Singapore’s most respected businessmen and his lifelong commitment to education.
From Gaia to Wee Cho Yaw Plaza
Originally known as Gaia, the building officially opened in May 2023. Named after the Greek goddess of Earth, it was designed by celebrated Japanese architect Toyo Ito.
What makes it special? It is recognized as Asia’s largest wooden building, constructed largely using mass-engineered timber. Natural ventilation, energy-efficient systems and abundant daylight help create a sustainable learning environment.

The six-storey building houses NTU’s Nanyang Business School, offering classrooms, study areas and collaborative spaces for future business leaders.

Who Was Wee Cho Yaw?
Dr Wee Cho Yaw (1929–2024) was the legendary banker who transformed United Overseas Bank (UOB) into a major regional financial institution.

However, his achievements extended far beyond banking.
His own education was interrupted by World War II, an experience that helped shape his strong belief in giving younger generations opportunities to succeed.
His relationship with NTU’s educational heritage began decades ago. He chaired the Council of the former Nanyang University from 1970 to 1980 and later served as NTU’s Pro-Chancellor from 2004 until his passing.
In 1995, he officiated the naming of Nanyang Business School and supported the establishment of the UOB Professorship in Banking with a S$1.5 million gift.
A Legacy That Continues Giving
Together with UOB and the Wee Foundation, Dr Wee supported scholarships, bursaries and educational initiatives that opened doors for students, particularly those facing financial difficulties.
His contributions included the Wee Foundation Bursary Fund, the Wee Cho Yaw MSc (Finance) Scholarship and the Wee Cho Yaw Future Leaders Award.
In August 2025, NTU renamed Gaia as Wee Cho Yaw Plaza, honouring his enduring contributions during Nanyang Business School’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Today, students walk through its beautiful timber corridors, gather beneath its soaring atrium and exchange ideas in spaces designed for learning and discovery.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of this building isn’t its impressive architecture, but what its name represents.
A successful life is not measured only by what we achieve, but also by the opportunities we create for others.
And that is a legacy worth remembering.
