Katsu-An at Changi City Point – Affordable Japanese Comfort Food That Surprised Me

If you work around Changi Business Park, you’ve probably seen the lunch crowd streaming toward Katsu-an — and after trying it myself, I finally understand why this little cutlet specialist has become a lunchtime favourite.

Katsu-an is no stranger to Japan; with 52 outlets across the country, the brand has perfected the art of making golden, satisfying katsu at wallet-friendly prices. They opened their first Singapore outlet at Suntec City, and now, with the new branch at Changi City Point, East-siders get their own slice of this Japanese comfort food.

What impressed me most? The price. At a time when Japanese donburi easily hits $12–$18 in Singapore, Katsu-an’s Chicken Katsu Don starts from just $6.90 for the small portion, and $7.60 if you want something a little more filling. Honestly, that’s almost 50% cheaper than many other Japanese restaurants serving the exact same dish — and the portion doesn’t feel “budget” at all. My bowl came with a generous heap of rice, fluffy egg, onions simmered in sweet savoury sauce, and of course, the star of the show: the chicken katsu.

The chicken surprised me — in a good way. The cutlet was juicy, tender, and crisp, with that satisfying crunch when you bite through the panko crust. It wasn’t oily or soggy, and the meat stayed moist even after sitting in the sauce for a while. This is the kind of comfort food that instantly hits the spot after a long morning in the office.

I also added a half-boiled egg and a bowl of miso soup for only $2.50 — an add-on price I haven’t seen in ages. Simple, warm, and very Japanese, the miso soup rounded out the meal perfectly.

As I sat there enjoying my don, I noticed big groups of office staff flooding in during lunch break. It’s clear this place has become a go-to because it’s fast, filling, delicious, and genuinely affordable — a rare combination these days.

With just two outlets in Singapore for now, Katsu-an feels like a hidden gem that’s slowly gaining fans. If you’re in the area and craving a good bowl of katsu don that won’t burn a hole in your pocket, this is definitely one to bookmark.
