🔥 OLD-SCHOOL FLAVOURS AT GOLDEN MILE 🔥
📍 A Walk Back in Time
I recently visited Golden Mile Thien Kee Steamboat Restaurant, a long-standing eatery with roots going back to 1952. Located inside Golden Mile Tower, the first impression can be quite intimidating — the area feels ulu ulu, slightly rundown, and honestly a bit unsafe at first glance, like a building frozen in time.
But once you step inside, the atmosphere changes.
🍽️ A Working-Class Dining Hall
The restaurant was busy with working-class diners having lunch, alongside small gatherings and celebrations. It felt real, lively, and very old-school — no frills, no fancy decor, just people coming here for food they trust.
🍗 Signature Hainanese Chicken Rice
We started with their Signature Hainanese Chicken Rice ($6, regular). They only serve steamed chicken — no roasted option here. The chicken came tender and flavourful, paired with a large bowl of chicken soup that tasted comforting and clean.
The rice was fragrant without being overly oily, and while the chili sauce was decent, it wasn’t the star of the meal.
🐟 Stir-Fried Ginger Fish Slice (Must-Try)
The Stir-Fried Ginger Fish Slice ($12.80) was easily the highlight. The fish slices were fresh with zero fishy taste, and the ginger gravy was outstanding — rich, savoury, and incredibly addictive. Honestly, I could finish several bowls of rice just with that gravy alone.
🍢 Pork Satay Surprise
They only serve pork satay, and it tasted surprisingly authentic. The flavour reminded me of old-school satay stalls — smoky, well-marinated, and not overly sweet.
🥬 Veggie Hokkien & Fried Rice
The Vegetarian Fried Hokkien Mee ($6) leaned on the bland side but came with a generous amount of vegetables and bean curd.
As for the fried rice, there was a clear wok hei, though slightly on the oily side — still enjoyable for fans of traditional fried rice.
Overall, this was a satisfying experience. Golden Mile Thien Kee doesn’t rely on fancy marketing or trendy concepts. Instead, it wins through solid cooking skills, consistency, and heritage flavours — the kind of place that reminds you how food used to be, before everything became about aesthetics.
Sometimes, old school really is the best.
