What Airport Staff Really Eat

When most travelers and locals head to Changi Airport Terminal 2 for a cool, comfortable lunch at the public dining areas, we decided to take a different route. Instead of joining the packed restaurants and food courts, we headed into a place few passengers ever see β€” the Terminal 2 staff canteen, where airport workers eat during their workdays.

The first dish we tried was Ayam Penyet ($7.90) from the halal stall. The chicken was served piping hot and well-executed. While it wasn’t especially juicy, the meat was still tender and satisfying. The rice came lightly spiced, though the flavour may not suit everyone. A classic chicken rice option might appeal more to the general crowd, but overall it was a decent and filling meal.

Next was a Chinese rice set with fried chicken parts, steamed egg, stir-fried xiao bai cai, white rice, and curry gravy. Unfortunately, this plate was disappointing. The curry lacked any real curry aroma or depth, and the fried chicken was extremely tough and dry, making it hard to enjoy. The steamed egg and vegetables were plain and forgettable, offering little to balance out the dish.

The surprise came from the vegetarian stall, where we ordered stir-fried beansprouts, ginger broccoli, and braised beancurd for $5. The portion was generous, especially for the price. The beansprouts were crunchy, the broccoli reasonably well-cooked, and the beancurd had a decent savoury sauce. The meal also came with a bowl of preserved vegetable soup, making it both hearty and comforting. For those who prefer a lighter, healthier option, this stall stands out.

Beyond the food, the environment deserves mention. The canteen is spacious, well-ventilated, and pleasantly cool, with plenty of seating available. When the airport’s public eateries are overflowing, this hidden canteen offers a calm alternative to escape the crowds.

It may not be gourmet dining, but if you’re looking for an affordable, quiet, and air-conditioned place to eat β€” especially during peak hours β€” the staff canteen is worth considering.
