Kallang Bahru Market & Food Centre: Old-School Flavours, Honest Prices

A Monday morning visit to Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre revealed a pleasant surprise — more than half of the hawker stalls were already open. Unlike some markets that feel quiet at the start of the week, this place was lively enough to feel comforting, with regulars settling in for breakfast and early lunches.

We started with Aljunied Wanton Noodles. I ordered a regular $4 dried wanton noodle, plus $1 extra wanton. From the first bite, the noodles stood out. They were springy and well-executed, carrying a clear egg fragrance. A light hint of lard oil blended beautifully with the stall’s homemade chilli, creating a balanced, savoury flavour without being overly heavy.

The char siew portion was generous, adding satisfying bites throughout the bowl. The accompanying soup had a clean, traditional wanton soup taste — simple but comforting. As for the wantons, they appeared to be made with pure minced meat, giving them a slightly firmer texture than the usual silky versions, but still enjoyable in a classic, old-school way.

Next, we moved on to Everyone Prawn Noodles, ordering the yellow noodle dry prawn mee at just $3.50. In a time when many stalls are adjusting prices due to inflation, this felt almost unbelievable. The portion was large, easily enough to fill an adult. The taste leaned strongly towards an old-school profile, instantly bringing back memories of prawn noodles from younger days.

While the ingredients were not overly lavish, they were fair and sufficient for the price, allowing you to comfortably finish the entire bowl without feeling short-changed.

We ended with traditional snacks from the 69 Teochew Kueh stall, ordering both Red Peach Kueh (Peng Kueh) and Soon Kueh for a total of $2. The kueh were fresh and soft, though the black sweet sauce was a little too sweet for our liking. If you prefer a cleaner taste, it’s better to request less sauce or skip it altogether.

Overall, Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre offers wide food variety, honest pricing, and dependable flavours. It’s the kind of hawker centre where choices are plentiful, portions are fair, and the food quietly reminds you why hawker culture remains a uniquely Singaporean experience.
