JB Kopitiam Feast

A recent food run in Johor Bahru led me to one of my favourite heritage streets โ€” Tan Hiok Nee Street. This charming stretch is lined with cafรฉs, traditional eating houses, bakeries, and small boutiques, many of which feel like time capsules from 70 to 80 years ago. The architecture, faded signboards, and conserved shophouses instantly reminded me of old-school Singapore kopitiams, making the walk itself a nostalgic experience before the food even began.

Among the many eateries, A Ma Teow Chew Kuih stood out almost immediately. Its exterior display and old-world outlook drew me in without hesitation. Stepping inside felt like entering a living memory โ€” a comfortable, air-conditioned kopitiam wrapped in heritage charm. The turning wooden staircase, old-style sofas, classic television set, and mosaic flooring created a warm, familiar atmosphere that brought back vivid childhood memories of visiting traditional coffee shops with elders. Itโ€™s the kind of place where time slows down, inviting you to sit a little longer.

We ordered a spread that reflected both tradition and comfort: turnip kuih (RM5), curry noodle (RM13.90), fried kway teow (RM12.90), and A Maโ€™s signature coffee (RM5.90).

The turnip kuih was a pleasant surprise and easily one of the highlights. It tasted original and well-balanced, with a comforting mix of turnip, carrot, and shrimp. The texture was just right โ€” soft yet structured โ€” and the flavours felt honest and traditional, exactly how a classic Teochew-style dish should be.

The curry noodle looked extremely promising when it arrived. The rich colour and generous toppings were visually tempting. Unfortunately, while it was decent, it fell slightly below our expectations. The broth lacked the depth and punch we were hoping for, making it more mild than memorable. That said, it may still appeal to diners who prefer a lighter curry profile.

The fried kway teow was average but satisfying. It came with a generous spread of eggs and bean sprouts, giving the dish a hearty feel. While it didnโ€™t stand out in terms of wok hei or bold flavour, it was comforting and easy to enjoy โ€” a safe choice for those craving a familiar plate.

To wrap up the meal, the A Ma signature coffee did not disappoint. The aroma was strong and inviting, instantly waking up the senses. Smooth yet robust, it paired perfectly with the nostalgic surroundings and completed the experience on a high note.

Overall, the service at A Ma Teow Chew Kuih was warm and sincere. The crew served with genuine passion, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. While not every dish impressed equally, the ambience, heritage setting, and comforting flavours make this a worthwhile stop when exploring Tan Hiok Nee Street. Itโ€™s a place that feeds not just your appetite, but your memories too.
