Tucked within the heart of MacPherson estate, Circuit Road Hawker Centre is a name that many long-time residents associate with everyday comfort and dependable meals. What makes this location unique is that it actually comprises two distinct yet closely connected hubs- 79/79A Together, they have served the neighbourhood for over five decades, housing traditional hawkers, a wet market, and casual dining spaces that reflect old-school Singapore hawker culture.

Over the years, the hawker centre had gradually shown its age. The slightly dim interiors, worn flooring, and dated seating were familiar sights to regulars. Hence, when the centre closed for renovation and repair works from 1 October 2025 to 31 December 2025, many residents looked forward to seeing how this beloved but ageing complex would be transformed.
We made a purposeful trip back after the renovation to check out the changes — and the difference is immediately noticeable. The ceilings feel brighter and cleaner, new flooring gives the space a more modern look, and the seating areas appear better organised and more comfortable. Stall exteriors and interiors have also been refreshed, lending a more uniform and tidy appearance across the entire complex. While the centre still retains its old-school charm, the overall atmosphere now feels lighter, more welcoming, and far more pleasant for dining. It’s sad to see that some famous stalls have left and been replaced by new ones that we haven’t tried yet.

Chim Guan Fried Oyster
Our first stop was Chim Guan Fried Oyster, a classic stall known for serving orh luak in three price tiers — $5, $6, and $7. The plate arrives sizzling hot, with a satisfying aroma of egg, starch, and wok-fried fragrance. The texture strikes a good balance between soft and lightly crisp edges, while the oysters are moist, plump, and taste fresh without any muddy aftertaste. Each bite carries gentle smokiness from the wok, complemented by savoury egg and just enough starch to bind everything together. It is not overly greasy, making it an above-average rendition that delivers comfort and familiarity.

Quarter Chicken Rib with Rice
Next, we ordered a quarter chicken rib with rice priced at $4.70 fr SS Western— a very reasonable deal in today’s context. The chicken skin is nicely crisp, while the meat underneath remains juicy and tender. The accompanying sauces add depth, providing a pleasant balance of savoury and slightly sweet notes. Service is fast, making this a solid everyday option for residents seeking a quick and satisfying meal.

Yu Long Vegetarian – Mee Hoon Kueh
We also tried the Vegetarian Mee Hoon Kueh from Yu Long Vegetarian at $5. The hand-torn noodles are soft with a pleasant chew, sitting in a light, comforting broth that tastes clean and homely. Ingredients are simple yet well executed, resulting in a bowl that feels wholesome and satisfying. A slightly bigger portion would make it even better, but flavour-wise, it delivers.

Overall, Circuit Road Hawker Centre’s renovation has breathed new life into this historic food enclave. It may no longer look tired and run-down, but it still preserves the soul of a neighbourhood hawker centre — affordable eats, familiar flavours, and a strong sense of community. For those who appreciate old-school hawker culture with a refreshed environment, this is a worthy stop.
