Singapore Zoo: From a Simple Family Outing to a World-Class Wildlife Destination

For many Singaporeans who grew up in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, school holidays were much simpler. Families would often head to the zoo, the bird park, the science centre, or Sentosa for a day out. There were no smartphones, social media, or endless shopping malls. Children spent their weekends surrounded by nature, learning about animals and enjoying precious bonding time with parents.

Among these attractions, the Singapore Zoo remains one of the most beloved childhood destinations. Located in Mandai, the zoo officially opened on 27 June 1973 and quickly became famous for its “open concept” design, where animals are separated from visitors by natural barriers instead of traditional cages. At the time, it was considered revolutionary and helped establish Singapore Zoo as one of the best rainforest zoos in the world.

Over the decades, the zoo continued to expand. In 1994, Singapore introduced the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park, the Night Safari. Visitors could now experience animals after dark, watching creatures such as elephants, deer and predators become active at night. The attraction became an international success and remains one of Singapore’s most unique tourism offerings today.

The next major addition came with River Wonders, originally known as River Safari. Opened between 2013 and 2014, it became Asia’s first river-themed wildlife park. The park showcases famous river ecosystems from around the world and is home to giant pandas, manatees, freshwater fish and many aquatic species. In 2021, it was officially renamed River Wonders.

The transformation accelerated further when the historic Jurong Bird Park closed and relocated to Mandai as Bird Paradise in 2023. Housing over 3,500 birds from more than 400 species, it is now Asia’s largest bird park and forms part of the larger Mandai Wildlife Reserve.

Today, Mandai has evolved into a massive wildlife destination. Besides Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders and Bird Paradise, visitors can also explore family attractions such as Curiosity Cove, Exploria and the newly launched Rainforest Wild experiences. The entire area is designed as an integrated nature and wildlife precinct where guests can easily spend several days exploring different attractions.

However, unlike the old days when a single zoo ticket was enough for a full family outing, today’s Mandai experience often requires separate admission tickets for each attraction. Visitors hoping to “conquer” the entire reserve may need to purchase multi-park passes and set aside at least two or three days to fully enjoy the zoo, bird park, river exhibits, rainforest adventures and night safari experiences.

From orangutans, giraffes, lions and rhinoceroses to proboscis monkeys, otters, crocodiles and meerkats—it is clear that Singapore Zoo remains as fascinating as ever. While Mandai has become much larger and more sophisticated, the essence remains unchanged: bringing families closer to nature and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Just like decades ago, children still leave Mandai with wide eyes and excited stories. The only difference is that today’s Singapore Zoo has grown into an entire wildlife world of its own.
