Singapore’s Own ‘Theme Park House’ Hidden in the East

You don’t need an admission ticket, roller coaster or souvenir shop to find one of Singapore’s most unusual “theme parks”.

Tucked away along Jalan Chempaka Kuning in eastern Singapore is a landed house that looks as though a zoo, superhero movie and fantasy park have somehow been squeezed into one front garden.

And once you spot it, it is almost impossible not to slow down for a second look.

From the road, the first thing that catches your attention is the sheer number of statues surrounding the property. A giant panda sits among the greenery, while a towering polar bear appears nearby. Look a little further and you’ll find tigers, deer, parrots, owls, frogs and even prehistoric-looking creatures competing for space.

Then things get even more interesting.

Mixed among the animals are familiar superhero figures including Spider-Man, Captain America, Superman and Green Lantern, with some positioned on the house itself as though they are protecting the property from above.

One corner features a large white polar bear standing proudly among colourful flowers, while another section has animal heads — including a rhinoceros and hippopotamus — sticking out from the fence.

There are so many details that it is difficult to take everything in during one walk past.

Look upwards and there are more surprises on the roof. Look towards the garden and another statue seems to appear from behind a tree. Even the front gate has its own collection of decorative figures.

One handwritten sign sums up the experience rather nicely:

“Your Adventure Begins Here.”

And it really does feel like one.

Perhaps what makes the house so fascinating is the contrast with its surroundings. Jalan Chempaka Kuning is otherwise a relatively quiet residential street filled with older landed homes, mature trees and neighbourhood greenery.

Then suddenly, you encounter what looks like a miniature Universal Studios, zoo and fantasy garden rolled into one.

There is no entrance, no queue and certainly no official theme-park map. This remains a private residence, so visitors should admire it respectfully from the public road and avoid entering or disturbing the occupants.

Still, as unusual homes go, this has to be one of the most memorable we have come across in Singapore.

Whether you notice the enormous panda first, the superheroes on the roof or the giant polar bear standing among the flowers, one thing is certain:

This is definitely not your ordinary landed house in Bedok.
