Step inside Beauty World Centre and you may feel as though you have travelled back a few decades. Forget polished marble floors, giant digital screens and luxury boutiques. Here, you get narrow tiled corridors, family-run shops, tuition centres, traditional businesses, casual eateries and a wonderfully old-school atrium filled with crisscrossing escalators.

And that is exactly what makes it interesting.
Beauty World Centre at 144 Upper Bukit Timah Road opened in 1984, but the “Beauty World” story goes much further back. During the Japanese Occupation, the area was home to an amusement park called Tai Tong Ah Sai Kai. After the war, it was renamed Beauty World in 1947 and gradually developed into a bustling market filled with food stalls, barbers, shops, a wet market and even a temple.

Unfortunately, the old marketplace suffered several fires. It finally closed in December 1983, and Beauty World Centre was completed the following year to accommodate shopkeepers and hawkers from the old market.

That history helps explain why Beauty World Centre does not feel like a conventional shopping mall. Walking through the corridors today, as seen in our visit, you will find everything from clothing and printing services to enrichment centres, jewellery shops and small eateries. Then head upwards and things get even better: Beauty World Food Centre occupies the rooftop level, where diners sit at familiar green tables surrounded by hawker stalls.

It is the kind of place where you can come for lunch, repair something, attend tuition, buy something unexpected and somehow spend much longer than planned.

Accessibility is another big advantage. Beauty World MRT (DT5) on the Downtown Line is only around a 2–3 minute walk away, while buses run along Upper Bukit Timah Road. Drivers also have convenient access from the PIE and surrounding Bukit Timah roads.
Interestingly, Beauty World Centre has something in common with Tanjong Katong Complex, another surviving old-school Singapore shopping centre. Tanjong Katong Complex was completed in 1982 and opened in 1983 as HDB’s first air-conditioned shopping complex, famously housing Yokoso, Singapore’s pioneering 24-hour Japanese supermarket.

Both are products of Singapore’s early-1980s shopping-centre era, but their origins are quite different. Tanjong Katong Complex represented modern retail, while Beauty World Centre inherited the spirit and businesses of an older street market.

Transport-wise, Beauty World Centre feels almost doorstep-close to Beauty World MRT. Tanjong Katong Complex is also convenient—roughly a few minutes from Paya Lebar MRT—and Paya Lebar has the advantage of being an interchange between the East-West and Circle Lines.

For anyone who enjoys discovering the Singapore that existed before today’s mega-malls, Beauty World Centre is worth a wander. It may look dated to some, but that slightly messy, independent and unpredictable character is precisely its charm.
