Welcome to Yunnan Garden (云南园), a peaceful retreat that feels surprisingly different from the bustling university campus surrounding it.
A Garden With a Story Dating Back to 1955
Long before NTU became the internationally recognized university it is today, this location was home to Nanyang University (南洋大学), established in 1955.

Known affectionately as Nantah, it was the first Chinese-language university established outside China, representing the determination of Singapore’s Chinese community to provide higher education for future generations.

Yunnan Garden, developed during the 1950s, became an important part of the university’s identity.
Today, visitors can still admire historical landmarks, including the Nanyang University Memorial, traditional pavilions and the distinctive Nanyang Arch replica bearing the year 1955.
Another meaningful feature is the university’s original motto, 自强不息,力求上进, displayed prominently across the grassy slopes. It reminds visitors of the determination and perseverance that shaped generations of students.

A Historical Garden Given a Refreshing Makeover
In February 2020, Yunnan Garden officially reopened following an extensive rejuvenation project.
The transformation created a sprawling 9-hectare heritage precinct, complete with landscaped gardens, walking paths, themed greenery and an impressive 5.6-metre-high artificial waterfall.

And here’s something interesting: the waterfall isn’t simply there to look pretty!
Together with surrounding wetlands, the garden’s water features form part of an environmentally friendly system that helps naturally filter and manage water.
It’s a clever combination of nature, sustainability and modern engineering.
More Than Just a Pretty Place
One of the garden’s most striking landmarks is the Chinese Heritage Centre (华裔馆), housed in the former Nanyang University Administration Building.

With its elegant Chinese-style architecture, red columns and traditional rooflines, the building offers a fascinating glimpse into Singapore’s educational and cultural heritage.

The garden itself serves several purposes. Beyond providing a relaxing environment for students and staff, it functions as an outdoor learning space, a heritage attraction and a recreational destination for the wider community.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks, photograph historical landmarks, appreciate the greenery or simply find a quiet corner away from the city’s busy pace.
Where Yesterday Meets Today
Perhaps what makes Yunnan Garden special isn’t just its scenery, but the stories behind it.
Every pavilion, monument and preserved landmark offers a reminder of the people who helped shape Singapore’s educational journey.

Yunnan Garden is more than a beautiful garden. It’s a living piece of history, where the memories of yesterday continue to inspire the generations of tomorrow.
