The 1970s: When Golden Mile Tower Was the Place to Be!
Travel back to the 1970s, when going to the movies was a big occasion!

Golden Mile Tower became famous for its magnificent Golden Theatre, which opened in 1973 with approximately 1,896 seats. Featuring an enormous curved screen and luxurious facilities, it was one of the region’s most impressive cinemas.

Imagine dressing up for a movie date, buying your tickets and settling into a grand theatre. No Netflix, no smartphones, and certainly no online streaming!
Those were the golden days when cinemas were major entertainment attractions.
From Cinema Glamour to Food and Nightlife!
As modern multiplexes started appearing across Singapore, Golden Mile Tower gradually lost its former glamour. But instead of disappearing, the building developed a completely different personality!

Over the years, its commercial spaces became home to small eateries, Thai food businesses, drinking spots, karaoke lounges and entertainment outlets.

Some corners offered casual dining, while others came alive after dark with music, singing and late-night gatherings.
The building developed a rather interesting mix of businesses. You could find everyday shops and eateries alongside discreet entertainment establishments.

Unlike the glamorous shopping malls nearby, Golden Mile Tower retained its old-school atmosphere. Some corridors seemed almost frozen in time!

Although the neighbouring Golden Mile Complex was more famously known as Singapore’s Little Thailand, Golden Mile Tower also had its own connections to Thai food and nightlife.
A Cinema Makes Its Comeback!
In 2014, part of the old cinema found new life as The Projector, an independent cinema showcasing cult classics, international films and alternative movies.
After The Projector closed in August 2025, Filmhouse continued the building’s independent cinema tradition, bringing movie lovers back to this nostalgic landmark.
An Old Building With Plenty of Stories!
Today, Golden Mile Tower is a curious combination of old and new.

With its retro corridors, dining outlets, entertainment spaces and cinema heritage, this is hardly your typical Singapore shopping destination.

It may not be flashy, but that is part of its charm!
From grand movie premieres to karaoke nights and hidden eateries, Golden Mile Tower has quietly reinvented itself across generations.
Next time you’re passing Beach Road, perhaps it’s worth taking a look inside. You might just discover another side of Singapore that modern shopping malls cannot offer!
