We started our breakfast at Wan Gui Beverages, a stall known for its classic kopi-and-toast offerings. The Toasted Bread Set ($3.80) was a simple pleasure done right. The bread was nicely toasted to a crisp, with a generous spread of fragrant kaya layered together with thick slices of butter. Once the heat from the toast gently melted the butter, each bite was rich but not overwhelming. Paired with soft half-boiled eggs and a warm cup of coffee, it was a comforting combination that felt both nostalgic and satisfying—exactly what a traditional Singapore breakfast should be.

Next, we tried the Mee Siam ($3.50), which turned out to be one of the highlights of the visit. The gravy was impressively authentic, striking a good balance between sourness and spiciness. It had that familiar old-school taste that’s increasingly hard to find, and the portion was just right—not too heavy, yet filling enough to keep you going. We also sampled the fried rice, which unfortunately didn’t quite meet expectations. The grains leaned towards the dry side and lacked the wok fragrance and cohesiveness that define a good plate of fried rice. While it was still edible, this dish clearly has room for improvement compared to the stronger breakfast items available around the hawker centre.
