Katong Shopping Centre: An Underrated Old-School Mall That Still Has Plenty of Character

Drive along Mountbatten Road and Katong Shopping Centre is difficult to miss.

Its distinctive blue façade, huge circular openings and wonderfully retro appearance feel almost frozen in another era. Step inside, and that feeling becomes even stronger.

Opened in 1973, Katong Shopping Centre holds an important place in Singapore’s retail history. It was Singapore’s first air-conditioned shopping mall, opening with around 250 shops and offices across its seven-storey podium and adjoining annex. Before the East Coast land reclamation reshaped the coastline, the mall was also much closer to the sea and was once described as the “Chinatown of the East” because of the crowds it attracted.

In those days, this was a proper shopping destination for residents around Katong and Marine Parade.

Textile, clothing and shoe shops were particularly prominent, while the Oriental Emporium occupied two floors and became one of the centre’s best-known tenants. Weekends could be packed with families coming here to shop, eat and spend the afternoon.

Then Singapore’s shopping landscape changed.

Newer malls such as Parkway Parade drew crowds away, and Katong Shopping Centre gradually transformed from a mainstream shopping destination into something much more unusual. Its original grey exterior was repainted in the now-familiar blue and yellow in 1997, but inside, the tenant mix continued to evolve.

Today, you don’t really come here looking for international fashion brands or a shiny supermarket.

Instead, wander around and you’ll find employment agencies, barber and hair salons, music schools and musical-equipment businesses, tailoring and printing services, pastry shops, a food court, pubs and small eating outlets. There are also specialist businesses that would probably struggle to find a home in Singapore’s newer, more tightly curated malls.

That is exactly what makes Katong Shopping Centre interesting.

One particularly well-known survivor is Dona Manis Cake Shop, which has been operating here since 1992 and is still known for its banana pies and traditional pastries.

Katong Shopping Centre may no longer be the “shopping paradise” it was in the 1970s, but perhaps that is part of its appeal.

It is quieter, slightly eccentric and undeniably old-school — an underrated neighbourhood mall where people often come for something very specific, then disappear again.

And in a Singapore increasingly filled with polished, familiar-looking malls, places like this are becoming much harder to find.
